Looking Good Dolphin! Test out our new look with V8.0 BETA!

Dolphin bottom menu bar

Spring-cleaning is here and we have been doing a little of cleaning ourselves. Today we are proud to present our latest exclusive Android v8.0 BETA.

For a more polished and better browsing experience we have revamped the bottom menu bar, Add-on Bar and our Sonar and Gesture features. These changes not only spice up the Dolphin look but actually make getting to any settings even faster. Want to know more about the change? Let’s check it out!

 Bottom Menu Bar

Now In v8.0 BETA, you can access the Menu bar without hassle right at the bottom of the main screen. Check out the new keys (from left to right):

  • Bookmark Sidebar
  • Forward or back
  • Gesture and Dolphin Sonar Access
  • Settings
  • Add-on Bar

Add-on Bar:

Never confuse icons again with our newly revamped sidebar. Now the Add-on bar is used exclusively for  Add-ons and show the full name. And as always, discover more Add-on by clicking the gear shaped button at the top or here http://dolphin-browser.com/add-ons/

Sonar and Gesture Features

Now you can access Dolphin Sonar and Gesture in one click by tapping on the Dolphin icon on the left to access Gesture and Sonar instantly. Also don’t forget you can move it over.

Another new change is the background has changed from dark grey to a fresh white. What do you think and does this make it easier for you? Let us know by filling out this short survey. And always you can send your feedback directly to the support team at support@dolphin-browser.com.

That is very attention-grabbing, You are a very professional blogger.
I have joined your rss feed and sit up for searching for more of
your great post. Also, I’ve shared your web site in my social networks

  2. john says:

regarding “open in background ” I am using dolphin version 8.7 I believe it is the most current version. Still having the same issue.

2nd problem I am trying the dolphin add on app to save bookmarks to sd card. The program crashes each time. Still fiddling with it to get it to work .

Thank you for the great browser, definitely one of the best.

    • Dolphin Browser says:

Thanks for your further info, John.
Do you update your Bookmarks to SD to the latest version on Google Play?
For your “Open in background” issue, I’ll pass it along and see whether we can fix it for you.

  3. Bobby says:

I got a question if someone can help me… which 3 of the dolphin browsers are better the dolphin HD, the dolphin beta or the dolphin mini… I got all 3 on my phone but only want one of them please let me know thank you

    • Dolphin Browser says:

Thank you for your comment, Bobby.
Dolphin Engine beta is new version, in which we enhanced the HTML5 capability.
Dolphin Mini is a lite version for Dolphin Browser HD. It’s light and fast but but as powerful as Dolphin HD.
Dolphin Browser HD is the most widely used and stable one with many exclusive features like Dolphin Sonar, Add-ons and Gesture.

  4. john says:

There are times when I long press a link for a new website and choose ” open in background” and it does nothing. Have to do it 1 or 2 times to get the new tab to open. No specific website. Just in general. Worked well before, my only change is the new android ” ice cream” system.- verizon razr maxx.

  6. Stanley says:

Not sure whether this been asked but one major issue when browsing on a phone, we definitely need to have the text reflow function. Opera has this… Any chance this could be incorporated?

Another feature that exist in the previous version is that on the current Page, when we long press on the + button, the option to add the web address to the bookmark. Previously you also have the option to add it to the speed button – the speed button appear on a new pages when you open a new tab. The current version do not have this function. Now can add by clicking on an empty speed button and it list down the list for you to chose. Sometimes you just wanted to add the current page you’re browsing to a speed button.

    Regards,
    Stanley

    • Dolphin Browser says:

      Thanks for your comment, Stanley.
      1. Zoom in/out a webpage first, double tap it and then it will be auto fitted to your screen.
      2. For second question, you can use gesture to make it.

  7. Josh says:

    Hi there,

I was thinking that maybe the time has come to incorporate parental controls into the browser. There are many kids and teens who who have smartphones today and there should be a way for them to stay safe on dolphin browser.

Please take this under serious advisement for the next update.

    Thanks!

  8. Chris says:

Love it! Only complaint, and it’s a big one for me, is that you still can’t scroll within a page. There are times when I need to scroll in an embedded window on the page but it won’t scroll; instead, the whole page moves. Firefox has this ability, but Dolphin wins on everything else. Any chance of adding this ability?

  9. Fabio says:

Will this new Dolphin look be available also for iPad? Dolphin seems to be the best alternative to Safari on iPad, but the green look is really a problem, since it conflicts with the colors in the websites resulting sometimes in a weird appearance. I think more neutral colors such as gray and black are better than the green.

  10. rod says:

Do I need a s.d. card to use gestures feature on a NOOK color with dolphin ?

  11. chucj says:

I think you need to bring back the save link as when you long press on a link to a file. For instance if i don’t want to stream something and would rather just download it to a file.

  12. i says:

How do you save a page on the updated dolphin browser? I frequently used that feature on the old version. Use to, when i pressed menu, an option save page as will appear, but now it has disappeared. Will appreciate your help. Tks

  13. Samantha says:

The fresh, clean look is beautiful! A total upgrade from previous look. With that said, I’m seriously thrown with not being able to move Gesture button! If we were able to do it in older versions why for the love of everything would you remove that feature? The quick to top button on the right is terrible, I try to select it and it disappears.. Just let us put Gesture back there and those who want can draw the to top of page shortcut! I find myself just circling around the screen looking for the dolphin since I’m trained bottom right and now it’s gone

  14. coeus00 says:

With most of the world being right handed migrating any buttons or functions that you want people to use away from the bottom right hand corner or the bottom bar seems a strange idea to me, the gesture button & the refresh being case in point. The split overlay button with gesture/sonar of the previous version was more intuitive than the new screen with slide bar. With the range of movement & gesture the touch screens allow sticking to the layout of a desktop browser seems a little bit unimaginative as well.

  15. MMB says:

Another request to put back the Save Link command in the long press menu! It’s one of the features I use most.

  16. Flipper says:

Your new version is absolutely awful!
“Reverted” back to the previous version.
WILL NOT, be “updating” ever again!

  17. Richard says:

Why would you disable the ability to move the gesture button? I had it on the right because I wanted it on the right. I didn’t secretly want it on the left. Why has this gone backwards?

  18. mike says:

Why no “save link as” to download a file? Pls return it back. I have to toggle between my native browser and dolphin just to save a file.

  19. nesakysiu says:

U better at least give beta for pad, cuz it havent been updated for whole year… ;(

  20. Fizzgig says:

+1 to moving the gesture button.

I’m not in favour of the new fixed position. You’ve taken away a flexible option to intruduce a new feature. Why not make them both configurable?

  21. eugene says:

Please bring back “save link as” used it all the time.

  22. Dmcritchie says:

Separate screen for gestures is awkward and confusing. Ditto on being unable to move gesture button when it interferes with links, button could be a lot smaller after all it is in a corner.

Menu bar is useless. Gestures allowed for bookmarking and refresh without wasting precious space on the address bar.

Context menu item for find is not available, if you (have to) to click on an image or link.

The elusive go to top of screen button is hardly ever present (thank goodness) and the gestures are much more adapted to a clear screen.

Major problems with selections carry pointer and where characters will actually be inserted or deleted when editing/composing. (the word was caret not carry, but too difficult to fix with the confusion).

Nothing to do with Dolphin, but Android soft keyboards without both a means of deleting back and forward of the carry make difficulty of placing the cursor all that more difficult to us a problem with a bookmarklet that works fine as a link but not as a bookmark in Dolphin. see http://
dmcritchie.tumblr.com look for “href” — preexisting problem before version 8.

Impossible to tell where cursor actually is in comment box here, appears to be where pressed but markers instantantly reposition themselves.

    • Dolphin Browser says:

      Thanks your for your comment.
      We hear your voice.
And now we are trying to fix all the problems that you have reported. Stay tuned.

    • dmcritchie says:

Reason why FIND is not working in 8.2.2

The actual reason that “Find” (using as a gesture) is not working in Dolphin on my tablet is that the characters are mixed up so a find for “dolphin” simply will not work. Start at the top of this blog and do a find on “d”, the first letter of “Dolphin” and the letter that gets found and highlighted is “G”, try the same for “t” and a “W” is found — three letters off.

Links on pictures do not work for meritline.com described here in my Apr 14, 2012 comment.

Some success by clicking on picture then triple clicking on the link. But it was easier to create 3 more gesture shortcuts for shopping cart, url increment, and done shopping once I could get a hold on the wanted links.

      Link context menu in inadequate.
      - Need to be able to distinguish between viewing image and bringing up a link
      - Need all of these
** Open image (the link not the image should be the default to open)
** Open link in new tab
** Copy link location (copying to clipboard should work for JavaScript bookmarklet as well)

  23. Dana says:

I need the “save link as” under the long press menu, in sure others need it as well. I hope this is inclueded.

  24. Nick says:

How do you do the action “save link as” when long pressing a link that is actually a file to download? In all previous versions if you long pressed on a link, you got many options like “open in new tab”, “open in background”, “share link”, etc.

The option to save the target is gone, this was one of the best features of Dolphin in my opinion. I used this for downloading a podcast that I subscribe to, it’s the only way to get it.
Thanks, and otherwise I am loving all the new changes!!

  25. Naviin says:

    hi,
I realized that the gesture button is fixed at bottom LHS. Please allow option/ setting to move it to any of the other 3 corners. I am very much used to bottom RHS. This is a major drawback.

+1 to reinstate configurable location for the gesture button
+1 for optional add-on names too please.
Good to see you guys not just resting on your laurels though.

    • Dolphin Browser says:

      Thanks for your comment Rich.
We add a Go to Top button at the bottom right corner so Gesture button cannot be moved.
As for your request for Add-on bar, can you tell why you don’t the names to be shown?

Nice look, just two small issues:
    - It would be nice to have the Exit button at the root of the menu
    - The blue theme doesn’t work anymore. Can you update it?

    • Dolphin Browser says:

      Thanks for your comment.
Exit button is under “More” now.
Except clicking the button, you can also exit by long pressing your hardware back button.
For the blue theme, can you explain more?

  36. Rafael says:

Love the new look. I like the scroll to top button but I would like the option to scroll to bottom as well.
I been having problems with the color theme. It says that is not compatible. I have htc sensation 4G pyramid Sense 3.0 Android v. 2.3.4 gingerbread
I concur with the others, make the name on menu when you swipe right optional, specially cuz of screen in phones vs tablets.

  37. Marc F. says:

The cursor issue also happens on Facebook and CNN article comments. Seems regular text inputs are ok. When its a multiline text input the problem occurs. Hope that helps.

  38. Bizitmap says:

Love : new theme, easily accessible “return to top ” button.
Problems : it likes to show only Grey on large pages, then start rendering if I scroll to near the top. I’d also like being able to move the gesture / sonar button to a spot that works better for lefties.

  39. Nik says:

    Hi,
how do I move the gesture button to the right bottom of the screen please.
It’s pinned to the left and I couldn’t find an option in the settings to change it.
    Please help.
    Kind regards

    • Dolphin Browser says:

      Thanks for your comment, Nik.
Right now, we changed the gestured button to left side forever.
But I will direct your feedback to our relevant team member and see whether we will change it back.

  40. Jo says:

The refresh button has been removed from the replacement bar at the bottom. Could this be added back in please?

  41. Adriano says:

In dolphin mini when i long-press on an image and click to view it, it opens in a new tab. In dolphin hd the images are opened in the same tab instead (forcing the reload of the page containing the image when i press Back). Could you make the images open in a new tab?

  42. Naomi says:

The link is fine, but that menu isn’t on my tablet. The bottom menu is super tiny. It’s awful. ;( 7 inch tablet btw. Here’s how it looks: http://i.imgur.com/Aw29J.jpg
    Way too small.

  43. regs says:

    Few more found problems.

    1. No find on this page in new menu
    2. When you long tap on page to open context menu it scrolls page down (can be reproduced on this page)
    3. Context menu appears without right padding. In some locales text goes right to the edge.
    4. Scrolling bugs. Even if you stop it, after removing finger it will start scrolling again.

All on Android 2.3, CM 7.2

    • Dolphin Browser says:

      Thanks for your comment.
Can you help us out and answer a couple of short questions?
      1. What’s your device model?
      2. On which page does the scrolling problem happen? Can you send us a url to do the test?
      3. Can you send us a screenshot about the context menu issue?

  44. regs says:

Swiping bottom menu would be a problem for most devices, as they have touch buttons right under display. Still could be good as optional.

  45. Marc F. says:

For some reason I can’t position the cursor in text boxes.

I love the new menu bar and colors.

Request: please make the menu bar display by swiping up. Similar to bookmarks and addon bar. I try to avoid hardware keys when possible.

  46. Old Menu Better says:

That larger size of the old menu is much better. Also keep everything as dark as possible please.

  47. regs says:

New menu is much better, than before, but mini menu is still much nicer.

Add-on menu is might be good for tablets, but for phones I think small would be better. It would be better as optional.

Yes, settings are already large enough, but you need to make about:config to make things optional at least for geeks.

I found at least one big problem – cannot move cursor in textareas and cannot scroll to last line, when it’s outside of visible area in textareas.

Do you have any plans for developer tools? At least source view and error console?

    • Dolphin Browser says:

      Hi Reg.
1.Do you have the cursor problem on which site? Can you send us a url link?
      2. Sorry. Currently we don’t have any plan for developer tools. Once we do, we will let you know.
      Thanks!

  48. smash says:

    Same here. Warning from bit.ly

  49. tamerngm says:

    Egypt

  50. mike says:

Will this version make it more compatible with download sites? Because this is the only reason why i have dolphin and Firefox installed

  51. devendra baid says:

    Good

  52. skopp says:

Ditto on the bitly thing. Make a direct link to your server or dropbox it

  53. Maarten says:

^with Carrie. I’m not going to download potentially malicious content.

  54. buttie says:

Yep, bitly is reporting the link, possible because of double shortening.

  55. Carrie says:

Would love to try the new Beta 8.0 but when I go to download it, I get a warning from Bitly that the link may not be safe
